THE LADY & THE MONSTER (1944) First film version of DONOVAN'S BRAIN. Stars Richard Arlen Erich von Stroheim (as nasty as ever!) and Vera Ralston. This version is much more Gothic/film noir with an old castle and lots of under lighting. Excellent.
THE PHANTOM SPEAKS (1945) Stanley Ridges reprises his role in BLACK FRIDAY as an innocent man possessed by a gangster. Where BLACK FRIDAY took the brain transplant route, this film is based in mental power and supernatural possession. For a small studio, this is an excellent programmer with solid acting, good direction and an excellent music score. Some creepy moments with the ghost of a gangster tormenting Ridges. Richard Arlen stars with Ridges.
VALLEY OF THE ZOMBIES (1946) Ian Keith stars in what is more a vampire story of a never-aging man who needs blood to stay young. A moody, well-done low budget picture. Keith was one of many considered for the role of Dracula in the classic 1931 film. Here you see him as a caped, shadowy figure in need of blood, to give a hint of what might have been. No Lugosi, but pretty darn sinister!
THE CATMAN OF PARIS (1946) Republic Studio's version of THE WOLF MAN. There's a half-cat, half-man running around Paris killing people who are involved with an aristocrat. Part mystery (who's The Catman!), part all-out horror! Some fairly graphic scenes for 1946. Pretty nasty looking make-up with The Catman in top hat and cape.

Also known as ENEMY FROM SPACE. Stars Brian Donlevy, John Longden, Sid James and Vera Day. A mysterious, heavily guarded factory is discovered. Food and agriculture development is the ruse...it's really a bunch of aliens bent on world domination through cloning and control. Shades of INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS in this top-flight science fiction feature from England.
HORROR OF FRANKENSTEIN (1970/Anchor Bay) - Used VHS
Stars Ralph Bates, David Prowse, Kate O'Mara, Veronica Carlson and Dennis Price. Hammer studios's re-make of the original Frankenstein story with Ralph Bates as a sardonic Baron Frankenstein and David Prowse (Darth Vader in STAR WARS) as the monster. Prowse is pretty nasty-looking....ahhhcck....he's choking me...arggghhh.
FLESH AND BLOOD (Hammer Documentary) - Used VHS
The story of Hammer films narrated by Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee. 100 minutes if highlights and behind-the-scenes of the trials and tribulations of one of the best horror movie studios ever. Warning ADULT CONTENT.
THE ABOMINABLE SNOWMAN (1957) - Used VHS
Stars Peter Cushing, Forrest Tucker and Maureen Connell. Peter Cushing and Forrest Tucker search the highlands for the infamous beastie. Cushing is doing it for science and Tucker is doing it for fame and fortune as he plans to catch and exploit the creature. Intense and sharply acted. Many British films of the time seem rather slow, but this never loses your attention. It almost seems like an English version of THE THING (1951); Isolation and a monster, lurking out there in the blinding snow. High production values with Val Guest directing for Hammer Studios. The best snowman movie made. Widescreen. NOTE: Crack in hard shell case.
SCARS OF DRACULA (1970) - Used VHS
Stars Christopher Lee, Dennis Waterman, Jenny Hanley, Christopher Matthews and Patrick Troughton. A kind of back-to-the-basics Hammer Dracula that works for me. Drac's in his castle, a young couple happen to wind up as house guests, and the nightmare begins. Still in the great Gothic trappings with superb visuals. This is the Hammer Dracula with Lee climbing the castle walls like a spider (as in Bram Stoker's original novel). Ah, and there's always the poor human servant that gets seriously roughed-up by the ol' count. Used VHS (has a small sticker on the back cover).
BLOOD FROM THE MUMMY'S TOMB (1971) - Used VHS
Stars Andrew Keir, Valerie Leon and James Villiers. The tomb on an ancient , and nasty, Egyptian queen is violated. A man steals the ring from the mummy's hand and unleashes the terror. The ancient queen posseses his daughter and then things get really bad.
THE BEST OF W.C. FIELDS (1930s) - Used VHS
Three great W.C. Field comedy shorts: THE DENTIST (1939), THE FATAL GLASS OF BEER (1933), and THE GOLF SPECIALIST (1930). Used, former rental.

Rest in Peace, Actor Mark Damon
From THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER to BLACK SABBATH and more, actor Mark Damon has left us. Here's more information from MONSTER BASH MAGAZINE writer Leonard Hayhurst:
Actor, producer and international film sales executive Mark Damon died May 12, 2024, in Los Angeles, California, according to Variety. He was 91. Damon was born April 22, 1933, in Chicago, Illinois.
Damon won a Golden Globe Award for Most Promising Newcomer for his role in 1960’s HOUSE OF USHER as Philip Winthrop. He also appeared in the horror movies BLACK SABBATH, THE DEVIL’S WEDDING NIGHT, CRYPT OF THE LIVING DEAD and several spaghetti westerns and foreign adventure flicks.
It was through his work overseas that Damon learned of the need to link American movies with foreign distributors. He founded Producers Sales Organization and helped to launch the American Film Market and Independent Film and Television Alliance to do just that.
Through this work, Damon was credited as a produce or executive producer on many films. These included DAS BOOT, THE NEVERENDING STORY, 9 ½ WEEKS, SHORT CIRCUIT, FLIGHT OF THE NAVIGATOR, THE LOST BOYS, MAC AND ME, FEARDOTCOM, MONSTER, IT’S ALIVE and 2 GUNS.

Iconic Director and Producer, Roger Corman Gone at Age 98
From the MONSTER FROM THE OCEAN FLOOR, NOT OF THIS EARTH, The great Poe films starring Vincent Price...and so much more, director Roger Corman has passed away. This in from MONSTER BASH MAGAZINE's Leonard Hayhurst:
Hollywood icon Roger Corman died May 9, 2024, at his home in Santa Monica, California, according to Variety. He was 98. Corman was born April 5, 1926, in Detroit, Michigan.
Corman was a writer, director and producer with close to 500 credits, per IMDB. He gave several Hollywood A-listers their start from actors like Jack Nicholson and Robert DeNiro to directors such as Francis Ford Coppola and Martin Scorsese. He also gave a second act to several horror veterans like Vincent Price, Boris Karloff and Peter Lorre. Most of Corman's movies came first through A.I.P., then under his New World Pictures or Concorde/New Horizons company.
Some notable flicks as director and producer included DAY THE WORLD ENDED, IT CONQUERED THE WORLD, ATTACK OF THE CRAB MONSTERS, A BUCKET OF BLOOD, HOUSE OF USHER, LAST WOMAN ON EARTH, THE LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, CREATURE FROM THE HAUNTED SEA, THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM, TALES OF TERROR, THE RAVEN, THE TERROR, HAUNTED PALACE, X: THE MAN WITH X-RAY EYES, THE MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH, THE TOMB OF LIGEIA and BLOODY MAMA.
Movies with Corman as a producer included DEMENTIA 13 with director Francis Ford Coppola, TARGETS directed by Peter Bogdanovich, BOXCAR BERTHA with director Martin Scorsese, CAGED HEAT with Jonathane Demme as director, GRAND THEFT AUTO directed by Ron Howard and PIRANHA with director Joe Dante.
Corman received an honorary Oscar for contributions to film in 2009 and was given the first ever Producer's Award from the Cannes Film Festival in 2011. FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER was named to the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress in 2006.
Rondo Remembers: Home From School
When I was a kid I rarely got sick, still don't.....but, there were a few times. It was "home sick" during school hours that I saw some pretty cool things on TV. That's when I saw The Marx Brothers for the first time in a movie called THE COCONUTS. Loved it.
Channel 9 out of New Jersey/New York always had odd programming. I remember watching a European horror movie one weekday when I was home sick. It was THE BLANCHVILLE MONSTER. I saw it listed in the TV GUIDE and thought....well, even though I'm sick, I'll get to see this cool movie. It was more of a subtle strange film and I was disappointed. I thought it would be an all-out monster movie. As an adult I appreciate it, but when I was a kid...it disappointed.
I remember my grandfather rushed in the mail a book for me when I was sick. It was a little Gold Key digest book....BORIS KARLOFF'S TALES OF MYSTERY. He knew what I liked. I was reclined on the couch, forgetting my fever, and reading that little digest with the creepy ghost on the cover and a scared gravedigger.
Of course, I could page through my copies of FAMOUS MONSTERS OF FILMLAND magazine. I soaked in those images of things like Anthony Quinn's THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME and Lon Chaney with Onslow Stevens in HOUSE OF DRACULA. Man, I was hoping that some day these would show up on TV. No Internet then, of course. I didn't have to wait long to catch HOUSE OF DRACULA on WNEW, Channel 5. But, THE HUNCHBACK with Anthony Quinn would evade me till the VHS age, a few decades later.
These are the memories I have while being stuck on the couch with a supply of Saltine crackers and a Pepsi. Not many memories of this since I really wasn't sick that much. I do, ashamedly, remember once trying to eek out another sick day. Mom plopped the thermometer under by tongue. When she walked away I would try to create friction on a thermometer between my thumb and index finger, so that it would still show a fever. Of course, this eleven year old brain was simply not that bright. Mom would give me a suspicious glare through squinted eyes as she saw my temperature reading over 103. Busted.
Fevered, but fun memories of sick days in the past for this monster movie loving kid.
